Hi Colin, apparently this is the designated degaussing area for Royal Navy ships. It starts at the mouth of Loch Long and continues to Gourock. I watched wave knight degaussing a while back ,and it was quite interesting as she spent hours going up and down at a fair old speed, she often gave a blast of her horn to warn small boats to get out the way!
I have no special knowledge of shipping matters, there are other sites which will give you the low down on all the technical stuff. I am just an amateur photographer who enjoys taking photographs of ships and boats,The Firth of Clyde is a tremendously scenic place and I hope some of this comes through in my photographs.

I've just looked up degaussing in wikipedia. I knew about it with monitors, and was aware of the potential issue with ships.
How do you know this ship was de-gaussing tho. Is this a regular place where de-gaussing is undertaken?
